hi

on the BBC in the UK this week they reported that air traffic controllers at
the charles de gaulle airport ignore the world wide rule on the use of
English, and routinely speak to their own French speaking nations aircraft
in the French language.

this was reported as being a safety issue since it prevents other non french
speaking aircraft having a full picture of what other aircraft are doing at
the time.

any comments on this attitude please?

Les compagnies aériennes doivent former leurs pilotes à comprendre la langue
de Victor Hugo.

Please remind us what Victor Hugo did for air travel? Or any Frenchman
for that matter?

Thanks.

Victor Hugo, not much, but 'any Frenchman'... well... I'd say the invention
of
the first _motorised_ aeroplane was quite important for air travel...

Thanks.
My pleasure

When and who was the Frenchman you claim invented the "first motorized
airplane"? Are you suggesting that it wasn't two brothers from Ohio?

Now it is true that the French did lead the world, briefly, in things
aeronautic, but mostly by copying or improving on things already done by the
Wrights. Many of the terms still used on airplanes are French words:
aileron, fuselage, empennage, and fromage (the first in-flight meal!).
After WWI, the Brits and Germans. slowly, quietly, took back the lead, and
after WWII, it was all the U.S. Still is. While Airbus is certainly
catching Boeing up, those planes are actually pieces of crap. They're
cheap, that's why they sell. They tend to crash. A lot.
